Improving the Message Indicator in the messages plugin

I would like to know is there a way to consistently improve the indicator of messages plugin? as what I have notice, there is a huge delay on the indicator when someone sent a message plus when the webpage is refreshed the indicator disappears again needs to wait again to show the indicator.
