Display search results in a "search engine style"?

Hi,
just wondering (as in need): is there a "simple" way to produce a search engine like output of search results, e.g. not in a tabluar format, but the different columns (and probably not all of them) block wise below each other, maybe providing the option to click on contents of column ... to jump to the record and/or show more of the resulting record (accordeon like)?
What about filters? Could they be placed "on the left"? Can anyone hint me in the direction of how this can be accomplished please?
