[Fixed] Dropdown default not working v22.14 and php 8.0

setting a default for a dropdown refereing a lookup table does not work in version 22.14 and php 8.0. I have rolled back to 7.4 for the time being, which works perfectly.

Dropdown default is also not working when it is not a lookup but from a drop down list and the default from the list contains non English characters.
If the default from the list is only English characters it works.

Character encoding, MySQL and PHP versions have not changed.
Character encoding is UTF-8
MySQL version: 5.6.51
PHP version is 7.4.30
