Table has a field defined as image and marked as required.

I can add records uploading images of correct file type and size.
I can't update records at all gives Error: You cannot leave this field empty.
Switching off the required field flag allows normal updating.

I tried this on a new table with just an image field separately and error is persistent.
Checked back end phpmyadmin, forced regenerating field also using field rebuild utility all seems ok.
Couldn't find any similar reports in forums sorry if this isn't new.
Is this a known limitation or bug?
