child records do not auto fill or save auto filled data

interesting but real pain in the whole lower back region this one.

i have a record that has child records. if you use the nice and lovely looking little box at the bottom of the record i get one of 2 things..

if i am using internet explorer it does not auto populate any field. so in this example i have a record called call.. and a child record called notes. the child record has a lookup of the call record as a field.
if i do the same with Google chrome it works... the field populates which is a big bonus. but, then again, works for the first note i add but then does not on the second. so i can only add 1 child record.

so to recap. with IE, its a no go..
with Chrome can only add 1 child record.

now... if i don't use the pop up and use the link at the top of the screen. it does not auto populate either... Help...
